Behind The Art

Acori Honzo, a Philadelphia-based contemporary artist, is celebrated for his "afro-pop" figurines—intricately detailed, 1/6 scale sculptures of iconic Black figures. These figurines, which range from historical icons like Malcolm X and Maya Angelou to cultural giants like The Notorious B.I.G., are a unique blend of art and cultural commentary, reflecting Honzo’s deep appreciation for pop culture and his desire to contribute to the celebration of Black history.

Honzo’s journey into creating these figurines began serendipitously when his wife purchased a Joker figurine of Heath Ledger's character from The Dark Knight. This figure, with its extraordinary detail and craftsmanship, struck a chord with Honzo. However, he quickly realized the glaring absence of Black figures in the collectible market. "I realized that there were no Black figures in this kind of detail," Honzo said, highlighting the moment of inspiration that led him to create his own figurines.

Driven by this realization, Honzo began sculpting his own figures, starting with clay models that he would cast in silicone and then replicate in resin. Each piece undergoes a meticulous process of hand-painting and outfitting, with Honzo modifying and refining the designs until he is satisfied with the final product. "I want every piece to be one of a kind and made with love. Love of our people, our features, and our heroes," he explains, underscoring the personal connection and cultural significance embedded in each work.

Honzo’s figurines are more than just collectible items—they are powerful statements that "speak loud" despite their small size. Through his work, Honzo aims to inspire others and contribute to the broader cultural dialogue, celebrating the richness and diversity of Black history.
